What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the perception of an unwanted sound in your ears or head that comes from no external source. Often heard as a ringing however, buzzing, rushing and cicada sounds are all common too. It can be an occasional or intermittent annoyance or be constant and a really debilitating, distracting and frustrating issue. It is often more noticeable when you are tired or at night when all is quiet.

What causes tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a symptom of other ear conditions, such as exposure to excessive loud noise, age-related hearing loss, ear injury, wax blockage or your circulatory system.

General anxiety and stress, and muscular stress, strain or abnormality in the structures close to the ear, upper mandible and neck, and conditions such as Otosclerosis, Meniere’s Disease, or even wax against your eardrum can all cause tinnitus. Medications, alcohol, caffeine and nicotine can make it worse too.

What is Tinnitus management?

Often, bothersome tinnitus can be reduced or managed so that it is less distracting or annoying; the first thing we need to do is a hearing test and look in your ears.

If you have a hearing loss the use of hearing devices could provide relief. Giving the ears back the sounds that they’ve been missing often reduces tinnitus, also by introducing more sounds from the everyday world around, you are less focused on the unwanted sounds. Modern hearing aids also have ‘tinnitus distractors’ as standard meaning that we can create tailor made soundscapes to relieve your symptoms.

In cases where more needs to be done to enable you to manage your tinnitus symptoms, we will guide you to the help you need. Whether that’s through tinnitus therapy- which focuses on relieving your underlying stress and the process of retraining your brain and other coping strategies – or onward referral to specialist services.
